Sung Mattins
Prayer Book Mattins is sung in the choir at 10 a.m. each Sunday. Choir and congregation sit together in the choir stalls, and the service is sung to chants in four parts. Saint Chad’s is one of few churches to maintain the singing of Mattins.
Sung Mass
Mass is sung at 11 a.m. on Sundays and at 7.30 p.m. on Holydays.
On Saturday the 28th of March 2009 Saint Chad’s held an open day, and the choir was asked to sing Choral Evensong. The choir enjoyed this so much, that several choristers suggested that we sing Evensong every Saturday at 4:30. We chose Saturday, so as not to clash with other churches evening services. We now have some additional singers who come just for Evensong, some travelling from as far away as Newcastle.
The service is a ‘cathedral-style’ one , starting with ‘O Lord, open thou our lips’ and ending with the five prayers after the anthem. There is normally a setting of the responses and the canticles, with music ranging from the sixteenth century to the latter part of the twentieth century. Please see the Music List for details of the next service.
Visiting Choirs for Evensong
We have now begun inviting other choirs, both church and secular to come and sing a Saturday Evensong on the days when our choir members are committed elsewhere. Our aim is to have a sung service every Saturday evening. Please contact for further details.
