A celebration in light and sound of St Chad's Church and the Borough of Stafford
Timewalk uses the latest computer generated technology to take you on a journey of history and mystery within the walls of Staffords oldest church - St Chad's Greengate Street.
Voices from the past, including one of Staffords most famous characters, Izaak Walton will guide you through the 900 years of the churches history, while dramatic lighting and sound effects enliven the story.
Meet the mysterious Ormus, who paid for the church to be built in the 1100s. Hear the sounds of Stafford on May fair day and market day, and the tale of the hobby horse.
Timewalk takes you through the years when St Chads, declined through neglect and decay, and into the period of its glorious revival as the church which now draws hundreds of visitors to enjoy its tranquil atmosphere and its unique Norman sculptures.
The launch of Timewalk coincided with the 800th anniversary celebrations in 2006 of Staffords borough charter, and the presentation reflects the close links between church and borough over the centuries. The sound and light programmme will then become a perminent feature of St Chads, ready to be enjoyed at advertised times, and also by prior arrangement with visiting groups such as schools, clubs and societies.
In association with other historic sites, Timewalk will integrate St Chads Church firmly into the town centre heritage scene.
Associated with Timewalk are the illuminated display facilities and modern sound system which will greatly enhance the role of St Chad's as an attractive venue for exhibitions and musical events. These facilities will be made available for use by exhibitors and performers by arrangement with the church.
The production of Timewalk is in itself a community based activity. Researched and written by two local historians and authors, the recorded programme uses the voices of Stafford people to play the principal character roles, and the incidental music is written by a local composer.
Timewalk was launched on 28th April 2006. Regular performances - Tuesdays - Saturdays, 2.30pm from 29th April.
