The Green Man/ May Festival 2012...
Saturday May 5th 2012 11.30 am onwards
St Chad's mysterious Norman carvings include several so-called "Green Men." The church was built at a time when the natural world was being explored in a new way as a revelation of God and poets and philosophers were using fantastic imagery.
This year in collaboration with Stafford Music Festival and "Shugborough - Inspired by the Past" Andrew Baker will be giving an illustrated talk about "The Realm of Pan - Arcadia and the Earthly Paradise"/ The talk with move from classical times to 18th century Shugborough, showing how images of the ancient Greek Pan merge with the Green Man in the middle ages and Pan's real of Arcadia became part of The Earthly Paradise.
Following the talk Alyson Lewin and Ellie Davies will be playing Andrew's Arcadian music for recorder and keyboard - exploring how the Renaissance imagined secrets of Ancient Greek music.

Last year, on Saturday May 7th 2011 at 12.00 the charismatic storyteller Xanthe Gresham told the story of Gawain and the Green Knight to an entralled audience. The Stafford Morris Men led everyone on a quest through the town to a climax in the Shire Hall Library, where they met the Green Knight himself in the form of an eight foot high puppet made by Carl Johnson of Stafford Library.
